The Bitcoin Token Sale That Paid the Liquid Whitehats in Every Single Mint Emptied Its Own Treasury on Day Two — 1.335 BTC Swept in Seven Transactions Across Two Blocks to Three Addresses With No Prior History

The LEAF / ico-20 sale raised 1.37964517 BTC from 875 addresses in thirty-one hours, then emptied its treasury on Sunday 13 September in seven transactions across two blocks — 133,500,000 satoshis to three addresses whose first-ever transaction was the sweep itself, split 60,500,000 / 60,500,000 / 12,500,000. Two forwarded 60,000,000 each within two hours and forty minutes; one carried an ico-20 instruction to transfer 100,000 LEAF. The advertised mint window had 9,465 of 9,666 blocks left to run. All 1,114 mints still pay 330 satoshis to the Liquid whitehat address.

Revolut Update: A Fake Government Data Request Sent From a Mailbox Inside a Real Government Domain Passed SPF, DKIM and DMARC — and Took Passports, Onboarding Selfies, IBANs and Full Bitcoin Transaction Histories. It Is the Second September Incident in Which Every Authentication Check Passed and the Sender Was Still Not Who They Claimed

Revolut has told customers that passports, onboarding selfies, IBANs, withdrawal records and full Bitcoin transaction histories were disclosed to an unauthorised third party after a fraudulent information request arrived from a mailbox created inside a real government agency’s domain and passed SPF, DKIM and DMARC. No keys, passwords, PINs or balances were described as taken and no funds have been reported moved. It is the second September incident — after approximately 347,000 Trezor subscribers on 9 September — in which every authentication check passed and the sender still was not who they claimed. The rule the desk now states in full: provenance is not authorisation.

A Token Sale Has Written a 330-Satoshi Payment to the Liquid Whitehats’ Address Into Every One of Its 1,109 Mints — One of Bitcoin’s Most Closely Watched Addresses Went From 296 Transactions to 1,426 in Two Days, Its 598.5 BTC Has Not Moved, and the Minters Have Paid 3.6 Times More in Miner Fees Than They Have Delivered

The Liquid whitehats’ address went from 296 confirmed transactions on Friday to 1,426 on Sunday. Bitcoin Mastery recomputed the full list: 1,110 of them — 77.8% of the address’s lifetime history — belong to a token sale called $leaf, and all 1,109 of its mints pay the whitehats exactly 330 satoshis. The sale has collected 1.379 BTC, burned 1,311,938 satoshis in miner fees to deliver 366,300, and stalled from 381 mints an hour to three in two. The 598.5 BTC has not moved since 7 September and Liquid has not been rolled back again.

Trezor Update: A Phishing Email Went to 347,000 Newsletter Subscribers From Trezor’s Own Sending Domain and Passed SPF, DKIM and DMARC — the Company Says Its Brevo Account Was Compromised, BitBox and CoinTracking Report the Same Provider, and the Fake “STM32 Entropy” Alert Asked Some Recipients for an xPub

At about 19:30 UTC on Wednesday 9 September an email headed “Critical Security Alert: STM32 Entropy Vulnerability” reached roughly 347,000 Trezor newsletter subscribers. It came from help@trezor.io, returned to mailing.trezor.io and passed every authentication check a mail client runs, because it was sent through Trezor’s own account at Brevo, its third-party email provider. The claim it made — that one in four devices generates weak 40-bit seeds — is false. BitBox and CoinTracking reported phishing through the same provider the same day. Five days after the ShipMonk breach reached 80,000 customers, the second Trezor incident of the month is a different kind of leak, and this update scores it on Field Guide #43’s five questions.

Liquid Is Producing Blocks Again — From the Block Before the Exploit: Blockstream’s Explorer Now Shows Block 4,050,336, the Height the Federation Says Was Exploited on Sunday, Timestamped Wednesday Night, 897 Heights Re-Filled, 490 Transactions in the First Two Hours — and Two New PGP-Signed, Encrypted Messages From Blockstream to the “Whitehats”

Blockstream’s Liquid sidechain restarted block production at 21:05:10 UTC on Wednesday 9 September — not by appending to the chain it halted on Monday morning, but from block 4,050,335, the last block before the one the federation’s own incident report identifies as the exploit block. The heights from 4,050,336 to 4,051,232 now carry different blocks, timestamped 9 and 10 September; the first two hours carried 490 non-coinbase transactions across eight blocks. Peg-outs remain suspended. On the Bitcoin chain, Blockstream sent the party holding 598.5 BTC two new messages on Thursday, both PGP-signed with its published security key and both encrypted. The whitehats have not written since their 10% demand and have not moved a coin.

Strategy Update: The 8-K Says It “Did Not Purchase or Sell Any Bitcoin” From 31 August to 7 September — Marker M1 Fails — While It Spent $176.3 Million Buying Back Its Own Preferred Shares and Doubled That Authorisation to $2 Billion; the $80,318 Tranche Closed Wednesday $2,036 a Coin Under Water

Strategy’s weekly 8-K, filed on Monday 8 September for the period 31 August to 7 September, states that the company “did not sell any shares under its at-the-market offering program and did not purchase or sell any bitcoin,” leaving holdings at approximately 845,050 BTC at an average $75,412. The desk’s marker M1 — at least one bitcoin bought in the week after Michael Saylor’s “We’re Back” — fails. What the company did buy was 1,810,885 of its own STRC preferred shares for $176.3 million, and its board doubled that programme to $2 billion. The 4,603-coin tranche bought at $80,318 the week before closed Wednesday $2,036.35 a coin, or $9.37 million, under water.

The Liquid “Whitehats” Sent 3,400 Bitcoin Back, Kept 598.5, and Have Now Written a Demand Into the Blockchain: Blockstream Must “Pay 10% Using Your Own Money” or Its Holders Take a 15% Loss — the Sidechain Is Still Paused at the Same Block It Stopped On Monday

At 16:09 UTC on Monday the party that pegged 3,996 BTC out of Blockstream’s Liquid sidechain sent exactly 3,400 BTC — about $266 million — to the federation’s peg address, kept 598.5 BTC, and then, at 11:45 UTC on Wednesday, wrote a 588-character demand into a Bitcoin transaction: Blockstream must pay a 10% bounty from its own funds or “cause all your holders a 15% loss.” Blockstream has not answered on-chain since its signed “safe to return the funds” message on Monday morning, Liquid’s explorer still shows the block it stopped on at 04:49 UTC Monday, an emergency Elements release is out, and the desk’s own marker on the return — 3,500 BTC by Sunday — is failing by exactly 100 coins.

Blockstream’s Liquid Sidechain Is Paused: 3,996 BTC — About $320 Million and 95% of Liquid’s Reserves — Were Pegged Out Through an Elements Software Bug on Sunday, and the “Whitehats” and Blockstream Are Now Negotiating in Signed Bitcoin Transactions

The Liquid Network, the federated Bitcoin sidechain built by Blockstream and used by exchanges, wallets and Tether, was paused on Sunday 6 September after a single customer order pegged out 3,996 BTC — roughly 95% of the bitcoin the federation held — using L-BTC that Blockstream says was “created through a bug in the Elements software.” The party holding the coins wrote “we are whitehats” into a Bitcoin transaction at 18:30 UTC; Blockstream answered on-chain with PGP-signed messages the desk has verified against the company’s published key; and by 03:30 UTC on Monday the whitehats had written that they will send “most” of the money back, after every node is patched. As of 06:13 UTC the 3,998.5 BTC had not moved. This is what is known, what is verified, and what is not.

A Shipping Contractor Kept 67,000 Hardware-Wallet Buyers’ Home Addresses It Had Certified in Writing Were Deleted — Trezor’s Breach Is Now Almost Six Times Its August Size, About 80,000 Customers, and Reaches Back to 2019

Trezor updated its breach notice on Friday 4 September to say that ShipMonk, the logistics contractor whose systems were accessed in August, had also been holding order records from a previous contract that ran from November 2019 to August 2021 — records Trezor says it had “repeatedly requested and received written assurance” were deleted. Approximately 67,000 more US customers now have their name, email, phone number, shipping address and order number in the leaked set, on top of the 13,689 disclosed on 13 August, for a total of roughly 80,700. No device, key or backup was touched; what leaked is a list of people who bought a hardware wallet and where they live. This is the news, the numbers behind it, and one falsifiable claim about what the count does next.

Payrolls Came In at Three Times the Consensus — 162,000 Against 53,000 — and the 2-Year Treasury Closed Just 3 Basis Points Higher. Marker J1 Failed, Hike Odds Went Back Above 50%, and Bitcoin Gave Back 40% of Thursday’s Gain

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported at 08:30 ET on Friday that US employers added 162,000 jobs in August, three times the 53,000 Dow Jones consensus, the largest gain since March, with June and July revised up by a combined 55,000 and unemployment unchanged at 4.1%. The CME FedWatch probability of a September hike, which Governor Waller had talked down to about 50% on Thursday, was back at 52.6% by 09:05 ET and at 58–60% by the afternoon. And the 2-year Treasury, which touched 4.4246% intraday — its highest since January 2025, per Reuters — closed at 4.37% on the Treasury’s file, three basis points above Thursday. Our marker J1 needed five. It failed. Bitcoin closed at $79,676.60 on Bitstamp, down 1.955%, giving back $1,588 of Thursday’s $3,963 gain; stocks fell 0.38%; and the number Waller said would decide his vote, the August CPI, is still six days away.

Strategy Update: The $80,318 Tranche Went From $12.1 Million Underwater to $4.4 Million in Profit in One Session, MSTR Rose 17.56% on a 5.13% Bitcoin Day, B. Riley Moved Its Target to $175 — and Marker H1 Settled 27 Days Early

On Tuesday this desk reported that Strategy had paid $80,318 a coin for 4,603 bitcoin — more than bitcoin closed at on any day it was buying — and that the tranche was $6.0 million underwater. By Thursday morning it was $12.1 million underwater. Then bitcoin closed at $81,265.00, and the same 4,603 coins finished the day $4.36 million in profit, a $16.5 million swing in one session. Strategy’s stock rose 17.56% to $144.82 on 43.9 million shares, its largest gain since 19 August, and B. Riley raised its price target to $175 from $155. The whole 845,050-coin position is worth $68.67 billion at the close, $4.95 billion above cost. Marker H1, which asked whether bitcoin would close above the tranche price by 30 September, settled on 3 September. A new one, M1, asks whether the company bought again this week.

A Fed Governor Said He Would Vote to Hold. September Hike Odds Fell From 67% to 54%, the 2-Year Dropped 5 Basis Points, Stocks Had Their Best Day in a Month — and Bitcoin Rose 5.13% to Its First Close Above $81,000 Since 14 May

At 08:30 Washington time on Thursday, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller told a Reuters audience that if August’s inflation data keep improving he will support holding the policy rate. Within minutes the CME FedWatch probability of a September hike fell from about 67% to 54.6%, and by the evening it was near 50%. The 2-year Treasury closed 5 basis points lower at 4.34%, the S&P 500 rose 1.06% to 7,747.71, and bitcoin gained 5.127% on Bitstamp to close at $81,265.00 — the eighth-largest up day of 2026, the biggest since 21 August, and the first close above $81,000 since 14 May. The same session brought $730.8 million into the US spot bitcoin ETFs, the largest of the fourteen sessions on Farside’s table. Payrolls print this morning; CPI, the number Waller actually named, prints on 11 September.

Private Employers Added Just 38,000 Jobs in August, the Weakest Since January — the 2-Year Treasury Did Not Move a Basis Point, and Bitcoin Closed Down 0.12%

ADP said on Wednesday that private employers added 38,000 jobs in August, below the 47,000 consensus and the slowest month since January, one day after JOLTS openings missed and hours before the Fed’s Beige Book said employment “rose very slightly.” The market that prices the Fed shrugged: the 2-year Treasury closed at 4.39%, unchanged, the 10-year closed at 4.79%, unchanged, and September hike odds stayed near two-in-three. Bitcoin closed down 0.124% at $77,301.83 on Bitstamp. We scored every ADP and payrolls release of 2026 against the 2-year: payrolls days move it 4.6bp on average, ADP days 2.1bp, and Wednesday moved it zero.

21 Banks Including Citi, Goldman, BofA and UBS Will Launch a Dollar Stablecoin in H1 2027 — Circle Fell 6.1%, Barclays and BNP Paribas Dropped Out, and Singapore Proposed a Yield Ban the Same Morning

Twenty-one institutions including Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, UBS and Deutsche Bank committed on 1 September to form a stablecoin company in H2 2026 with a USD coin targeted for H1 2027 and a euro coin to follow. Eight of October 2025's ten founding banks remain; Barclays and BNP Paribas are absent. Circle fell 6.13%. The same morning Singapore proposed 100% reserves and a ban on yield. What it means for bitcoin's rails.

Japan's 10-Year Hit 3% for the First Time Since 1996, the US 10-Year Closed at a 20-Month High, Gold Lost 7% in a Week — and Bitcoin Is 0.23% From Friday's Close

Japan's ten-year yield closed at 3% for the first time since 1996, the US ten-year closed at 4.79%, gold is down 7.3% in seven sessions and Asian equities fell 2-4% overnight after US-Iran strikes pushed Brent above $95. Bitcoin is 0.23% below Friday's close. We split the Treasury move into real yield and breakeven: the Warsh day was real rates, Tuesday was inflation, and the 'highest since 2023' claim does not survive the daily series.

Four Outlets Published Four Different Odds of a September Fed Hike Yesterday. The Two-Year Treasury Did Not Move at All

The biggest number in global markets this morning is the probability that the Federal Reserve raises rates on 16 September. Four outlets published four different versions of it inside seventy-two hours: 57.5%, 58%, 60.4% and 66.1%, all sourced to the same CME FedWatch tool. They are not contradicting each other — they are timestamps — but the spread is 8.6 points and almost nobody printed the clock. Meanwhile the instrument that actually has to price the decision did something more interesting than any of them: the two-year Treasury yield moved 14 basis points on Friday when Warsh spoke, and then, on the Monday when the published odds jumped to 66%, it did not move at all. For bitcoin, which just closed its best August on record into a tightening Fed, that gap is the story.

Strategy Paid $80,318 a Coin for 4,603 Bitcoin — More Than Bitcoin Closed at on Any Day It Was Buying — and the Tranche Is Already $6 Million Underwater

Strategy ended a ten-week pause on Monday with an 8-K disclosing 4,603 bitcoin bought between 24 and 30 August for $369.7 million, an average of $80,318 a coin. We checked that average against the market it was buying into. Bitcoin did not close above $80,318 on a single one of those seven days — the highest close in the window was $80,249.58 on 27 August — and the volume-weighted average price of the same seven days on Binance was $78,930.87. Strategy paid 1.757% above it, or $6.385 million more than the window’s own average trade. At Tuesday morning’s price the tranche is worth $6.002 million less than it cost. The whole 845,050-coin position, by contrast, is $3.044 billion in front.

Saylor Posted ‘We’re ₿ack’ on Sunday. The Filing That Decides It Lands This Morning — and the $2.8bn Profit Figure in Circulation Is $225m Too Small

Strategy has bought no bitcoin since 22 June and raised $2.0 billion in a single week without spending it. Its 24 August 8-K reports 840,447 coins at a $63.36 billion aggregate cost — an average of $75,385, not the $75,653 circulating in coverage. At Monday’s price the position is $2.18 billion in profit, after being $10.56 billion under water on 1 August.

The US Struck Iran at the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. Oil Jumped, Gave Half of It Back Within Hours — and Bitcoin Moved 0.35%

US forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, the first American military action against Iran in about five weeks. Crude rose 1.9% on the Associated Press’s early quote and was up only 1.08% by 21:37 ET. Bitcoin was $77,973.57 on Monday morning, up 0.35%. Across eleven days of continuous escalation it is down 0.449%.

Bitcoin’s Nine-Session ETF Inflow Streak Ended With −$201.9m — and One Fund Was 56.9% of It

One fund did most of the damage, and it was not the one anybody watches. ARKB redeemed $114.9m against IBIT's $33.4m, three funds printed exactly zero, and the month's total now sits $102.5m short of the bar we set for it - with one trading session left.

Warsh Said ‘Hike’ Three Times at Jackson Hole. All Three Were About Walking — and He Said ‘Payment’ Zero Times at a Payments Symposium

Markets repriced September from 35% to about 59% on a speech that never proposed a rate increase. We counted every word against the Fed's own transcript: 'hike' appears three times, all three about walking the trails around Jackson Hole. And the hourly tape says the break came at noon Eastern, two hours after he finished.

August 2026 Is Bitcoin’s Best August on Record — Not ‘Since 2017’ — and the Year Is Still Down 8.86%

A claim circulating this week says August 2026 is Bitcoin’s best August since 2017. We pulled all 109 monthly candles Binance has printed for BTCUSDT: at +27.02% it is the best August in the entire record, 13.42 points clear of 2021, and 2017’s +10.87% is only third. It is also the best month of any kind since November 2024, and the year to date is still −8.86%.

The Man Whose Bank Hosts Jackson Hole Says Rates Are ‘Very Accommodating’ — and Floated 50 Basis Points. Bitcoin Went to Its Highest Since May Anyway

Kansas City Fed president Jeff Schmid, whose bank hosts Jackson Hole, said the policy rate is “very accommodating” and answered “we’ll see” when asked about 25 or 50 basis points of hikes. Bitcoin then printed $81,478.87, its highest since May 2026, and spot ETFs took a ninth straight positive session at +$242.3m. Warsh’s first keynote lands 10:00 a.m. ET Friday.

BlackRock Has Swapped More Than $5 Billion of Bitcoin Into IBIT Shares — and Not One Dollar of It Is an Inflow

Robbie Mitchnick told Bloomberg on 25 August 2026 that IBIT has processed more than $5bn of in-kind bitcoin-to-ETF conversions, roughly double the ~$3bn of October, after the minimum was cut from $25m to $1m in July. None of it is an inflow. Plus Wednesday's +$232.2m row, and the Grayscale pattern: GBTC's -$50.4m was 92.9% offset by its own Mini Trust, and the complex is a net receiver of $79.2m in August.

Jackson Hole Opens Today, and the Fed’s Own Release Names Cryptocurrencies and Stablecoins — 36 Hours After an Inflation Print That Did Not Actually Move

The Kansas City Fed's 49th Jackson Hole symposium opens 27 August 2026 on the theme 'Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy' - and the Fed's own 25 August release names cryptocurrencies and stablecoins in its framing paragraph. Meanwhile July core PCE held at 3.3% and headline at 3.7%: both annual rates are unchanged from June, contrary to most coverage. Bitcoin enters the week at $78,667.68, up 25.09% in August.

The World’s First Zcash ETF Opened Three Per Cent Below Its Own Coins and Closed at Par — While ZEC Fell 7.6%

Grayscale's ZCSH, the world's first spot Zcash ETP, debuted on NYSE Arca on 25 August 2026 with $14.8m of volume and closed down 1.54% at $63.10. The arithmetic shows it opened roughly 3% below the value of its own 387,849 ZEC and finished within 0.18% of NAV - the arbitrage mechanism working in public on day one. Also: the widely quoted $313m asset figure is a day stale.

The Fed’s Favourite Inflation Gauge Lands at 8:30, Two Days Before Warsh’s First Jackson Hole — and Bitcoin Gave Back Its $81,272 Breakout While New York Slept

July core PCE publishes at 8:30 a.m. ET today with consensus split between 3.2% and 3.3%, two days before Kevin Warsh's first Jackson Hole keynote as Fed Chair. Bitcoin enters it at $78,973 after printing $81,272.62 at 10 p.m. New York time and giving all of it back: the entire US cash session traded at least 2.10% below the high. ETFs bought a seventh straight day, but IBIT did 90.5% of it.

Strategy Creates ‘USD Cash’, Sells $2.01 Billion of Stock in a Week, and Buys Zero Bitcoin

Strategy sold $2.01 billion of its own stock in the week bitcoin had its best week since March 2023, and bought none of it. Instead it created USD Cash, a new $1.59 billion pool that is 98.7% funded by that single week of issuance. Every line reconciled from the filing: the USD Reserve closes exactly at $5.10bn, the implied issue price was $109.88 a share (up 13.89% on the prior week), and the STRC buyback retired $143.1m of stated amount for $136.4m of cash.

Treasury Names Digital Assets a Sanctionable Sector of Iran’s Economy — and Bitcoin Answers With $81,272, Its Highest Print Since 15 May

Treasury named digital assets a sanctionable sector of Iran’s economy on Monday, alongside roughly 60 designations. Bitcoin printed $81,272.62 on Tuesday, its highest since 15 May — 102 days. But crude fell 2.35% into the announcement and the long bond rallied, so we are again declining the geopolitical-hedge framing. Plus: ETF breadth returned on Monday, non-IBIT flow up 88.7%, and Bessent’s own $1 billion figure retires the $500 billion number circulating all weekend.

Strategy’s Monetisation Programme Now Has a Price Tag: 6,916 Bitcoin Sold at an Average of $62,078, Worth $108 Million More at Sunday’s Close

Strategy has not bought a bitcoin since the week ending 21 June. Across nine reporting periods it sold 6,916 coins for $429.33 million, an average of $62,077.79 — 20.14% below Sunday’s settled weekly close of $77,734.00. The gap is $108.28 million. Meanwhile the remaining 840,447-coin position went from $52.1 million above cost on Friday to $1.97 billion above it at the weekly close, and the tenth consecutive weekly 8-K lands today.

Oil Falls Into Bessent’s ‘Economic D-Day’ — and Bitcoin’s Settled Weekly Close Makes It the Best Week Since March 2023, by $989.71

Brent fell 1.38% to $93.09 ahead of Treasury Secretary Bessent’s 2:00pm ET Iran sanctions press conference — the market’s first vote on “economic D-Day” was to sell oil. Meanwhile bitcoin’s weekly candle settled at $77,734.00, a 23.58% gain and the largest since March 2023, clearing the threshold we published on Sunday by $989.71. Sixteen straight funding settlements at or below baseline; coin open interest at a series low.

Grayscale’s 8-K Settles the Ticker: The Zcash ETF Is ZCSH, and It Anticipates Listing on NYSE Arca on or About 25 August

The crypto press spent the weekend split between ZCH and ZCSH. Grayscale’s Form 8-K, filed 21 August 2026, settles it: the ticker is ZCSH, the trust becomes The Zcash ETF, and shares are anticipated to begin trading on NYSE Arca on or about 25 August — a date almost nobody carried. Plus what GBTC’s $27.5bn of post-conversion outflows say about trust conversions, and why ZEC’s 62% week looks nothing like bitcoin’s 21% one.

Hormuz Shut, Bessent’s Sanctions Monday, and a Weekend That Quietly Changed Which Record Bitcoin Is Setting

The Strait of Hormuz has been shut to routine commercial shipping since 30 July and Scott Bessent details his Iran sanctions at 2pm ET Monday. Meanwhile bitcoin’s first back-to-back losing days of the rally have moved the week from +22.89% to +21.10% — and with it, the record it is setting, from best week since March 2023 to best week since February 2024. The boundary is $76,744.29, and it settles tonight.

23/08/2026

Six Days That Decide the Rally: Bessent’s Sanctions Monday, July PCE Wednesday, Warsh’s First Jackson Hole Friday

Bitcoin ends the week 22.8% higher and walks straight into the densest macro calendar of the quarter: a Treasury sanctions press conference Monday, the last inflation print before the September FOMC on Wednesday, and Kevin Warsh’s debut Jackson Hole keynote on Friday under a theme that is, for the first time, about payments technology. Day by day, with the markers that settle alongside.

22/08/2026

At 2:30 p.m. ET today the White House seats Kalshi and Polymarket at a table with the SEC chair, the CFTC chair, the NYSE, Nasdaq, CME Group and the DTCC — six days after Baltimore sued both prediction-market operators for running what it calls unlicensed sports betting. And on Tuesday, five days after cancelling the meeting at which it was to be voted, the SEC proposed Regulation Crypto Assets anyway, without an open meeting. The guest list is the story, and so is the fact that the rulebook arrived without one.

A Month Past Its Deadline, the GENIUS Act Still Has Zero Final Rules — and a January 2027 Clock Is Now Running

Ten proposed rules. Zero finalised. The GENIUS Act gave regulators one year to write the rulebook for payment stablecoins, that year expired on July 18, 2026, and the deadline passed without a single final rule. The practical consequence is a date: with no final rules to start a 120-day clock, the statute now defaults to taking effect on January 18, 2027 — which lands the whole regime on issuers eleven days before it can plausibly be ready. Eleven days before Jackson Hole devotes itself to payments.

The quietest Sunday in weeks precedes the loudest ten days of the summer.
