A claim has been circulating this week that August 2026 is Bitcoin’s best August since 2017. We pulled every monthly candle Binance has ever printed for BTCUSDT — 109 of them, August 2017 through this morning — to check it. The claim is wrong in a specific and instructive way: 2017 is not the benchmark it sounds like, and August 2026 is not merely the best August since something. It is the best August in the entire record, by a margin of more than thirteen percentage points.
Every August on the record
| Year | Open | Close | Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | $62,887.88 | $79,880.14 (month incomplete) | +27.02% |
| 2021 | $41,461.84 | $47,100.89 | +13.60% |
| 2017 | $4,261.48 | $4,724.89 | +10.87% |
| 2020 | $11,335.46 | $11,649.51 | +2.77% |
| 2019 | $10,080.53 | $9,587.47 | −4.89% |
| 2025 | $115,764.07 | $108,246.35 | −6.49% |

Source and window, stated because a superlative without a window is not falsifiable: Binance BTCUSDT monthly klines, the full series the endpoint serves, first bar August 2017, pulled 28 August 2026 at 06:30 UTC. This is a nine-year record on one venue. It excludes 2013–2016 entirely, and the August 2017 bar is Binance’s first month of trading on the pair, so treat it as thin. Within that stated window the ranking above is complete.
Note what the “best since 2017” framing does. It implies 2017 was the bar to beat. It was not — 2017’s +10.87% is third, behind 2021’s +13.60%. Six of the last nine Augusts have been negative. August has, on this record, been a mildly bad month for Bitcoin. That is what makes 2026 unusual, and the sloppy comparison year buries it.
It is also the best month of any kind since November 2024
Ranked against all 109 monthly bars rather than just the Augusts, +27.02% sits inside the top thirty. The most recent month to beat it was November 2024, at +37.15% — twenty-one months ago. The all-time leaders on this record are May 2019 (+60.75%), November 2017 (+52.24%) and October 2017 (+47.61%), so August 2026 is emphatically not a record month in absolute terms. It is the best month of the current era.

And the year is still down 8.86%
This is the number that should sit next to the celebration. Bitcoin opened 2026 at $87,648.21. It trades at $79,885.13 as of 06:12 UTC today. After the best August in the record, the year to date is −8.86%.
The path explains it. February closed at $66,973.26 after a month that touched $60,000. June closed at $58,624.71, its low $58,115.01. The July close of $62,887.88 was the starting point for everything August has done. A +27.02% month off that base recovers a great deal and still leaves the year negative. Today’s high of $81,478.87 is the best print since May 2026 and remains 1.65% below the May high of $82,850.00, which caps the entire range.
The ETF month tells the same story in miniature
US spot bitcoin ETF flows, month by month, 2026 (Farside Investors, pulled 28 August):
| Month | Net flow |
|---|---|
| January | −$1,604.8m |
| February | −$206.6m |
| March | +$1,315.6m |
| April | +$2,021.7m |
| May | −$2,406.0m |
| June | −$4,509.7m |
| July | +$172.8m |
| August (19 rows) | +$3,524.3m |
| 2026 year to date | −$1,692.7m |
August is 74.3% larger than April, 2026’s previous best month, with two sessions still to run. Through July the year stood at −$5,217.0m; August has recovered 67.6% of that in nineteen sessions. It is nonetheless not a record month for the category — November 2024 ($6,465.3m), February 2024 ($6,036.2m) and July 2025 ($6,012.6m) all remain larger.
And, as with the price, the composition is narrower than the headline. IBIT accounts for $2,917.1m of August’s $3,524.3m — 82.8% of the month. On 27 August, the ninth consecutive positive session, IBIT took $277.6m against a complex total of $242.3m, meaning the other eleven vehicles were −$35.3m in aggregate, with FBTC alone at −$83.6m, its largest single-session outflow of the month.
Three ways this statistic can mislead you
The month is not over. Two sessions remain, 28 and 31 August. Everything above is a reading on an incomplete bar and will change. We are publishing it with the month unfinished because the claim being corrected was also published with the month unfinished.
The base was a trough. A +27.02% month measured from the close of a month whose low was $57,800 is arithmetically flattered. The same points of price added at a higher base produce a smaller percentage. Percentage-of-month statistics reward starting low, which is exactly the condition that preceded this one.
Seasonality is not a mechanism. Nine Augusts is nine observations. Six negative and three positive is not a pattern with any statistical content, and neither is one large outlier. If somebody tells you August is a bad month for Bitcoin, or that this August proves the seasonal effect has broken, they are reading tea leaves out of a sample too small to hold tea.

The one-line version
August 2026 delivered +27.02%, the best August in the nine-year Binance BTCUSDT record and the best month of any kind since November 2024, on $3,524.3m of ETF inflow that was 82.8% BlackRock — and it leaves Bitcoin 8.86% down on the year, ETF flows $1,692.7m negative for 2026, and the price 1.65% below the May high it has spent three months trying to reach. Both halves of that sentence are the same month.
